The lake was always considered a bay of Rainbow until it was named in honor of Sam Nessling, one of the founders of the Grand View Hotel, so elaborate it was one of the finest in the Midwest in the late 1800s. One of the original steamboats of the Chain, the Lady of the Lakes, sank in Nessling and can be viewed by divers or by glass-bottom boat.
